Although not a Swindonian, William Gosling from Wanborough near Swindon, of the Royal Field Artillery, attached to a Trench Mortar Battery 51st Highland Division, won the Victoria Cross. He survived the war and later ran his own dairy in Wroughton near Swindon. He is buried in St Helens and St John the Baptist Churchyard in Wroughton
